Monsoon Wedding Musical is a production by the Academy Award nominated Director and Producer Mira Nair.
Based on the film Monsoon Wedding which won the Golden Lion and a Bafta and became the highest-grossing foreign film of all time. "Monsoon Wedding, directed by prolific filmmaker Mira Nair, is an award-winning film that paints a portrait of a globalizing India, the India in fact that we now live in. It was a juxtaposition of the ancient and modern in every way: architecturally, emotionally, sexually. That was almost 20 years ago. Now more than ever, there is an enormous division and discrepancy between the rich and the poor, the old and the new, the traditional and the modern, the east and the west.
In Monsoon Wedding the musical, the bride and the groom both meet across the oceans and both have their own vision of India and America.
This is that beautiful collision that is at the heart of Monsoon Wedding. The heart of our story is also about different kinds of love. There’s the “old show love” the love between the father and mother of the bride over many years that finds itself again. There is the love that is arranged but could ignite the love between the groom and the bride. There is the love over a flower, the nonmaterial love of Alice and Dubey, the maid and the tent man. And finally there is the sick, twisted love that is also unfortunately in our lives.
People will see themselves in this story and in this family because it is a universal story.
The story of a family that does not want to split, that does not want to break despite the vicissitudes of life. In Monsoon Wedding, the story of this family is told in a combination of great truth and great fun. Fun is critical, but fun cannot mask darker things. The musical has a beautiful kind of balance between silence and music, darkness and real joy.
At its foundation, this is a story about love. The love that we want to understand. The leave that we all yearn for. The love that we want to recognize and discover how we became a part of it. The musical creatives onstage a feeling of mastic, of a kind of intoxication with life. It is an ultimate bridge making project, but also comes from a place that is playful, irreverent and modern in terms of its use of design, music and costume.
The musical has a dream team of collaborators Sabrina Dhawan and Arpita Mukherjee (Book), Masi Asare and Susan Birkenhead (lyrics), a stunning Indian cast that took 5 years to find, scenic designer (Jonathan Fensom), Frantic Assembly’s Scot Graham as movement directors and Mira Nair and Nikhil Mehta as co-directors. The Indian composer, Vishal Bhardwaj’s music illuminates the show, mixed with three hit songs from the film by the Oscar-winning composer, Mychael Danna. Jamshied Sharifi, the Tony Award- winning orchestrator of The Band’s Visit, has created the orchestration.
Monsoon Wedding the musical welcomes you to the raggedy wedding bands, opiated horses, colour and tamasha!
