Dugongs are believed to have first appeared in the waters of the Arabian Gulf approximately 7,500 years ago. They play a huge part in the ecosystem around Qatar and are a fitting inspiration for this new icon on Doha's popular Corniche.
Qatar Museums commissioned this site-specific installation for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. It joins an ever-growing line-up of public artworks throughout the city. Commonly known as ‘sea cows’, the world’s second-largest population of dugongs live in Qatar, so this artwork celebrates Qatar’s natural heritage.
One of the world’s top contemporary artists, Koons is known for his inflatable balloon sculptures, often drawing inspiration from everyday objects, which he transforms into mesmerising sculptures.
Dugong by Jeff Koons is conveniently located close to many of Doha's favourite sights, restaurants and world-class hotels.
