History of Lusail

Lusail City is a significant site in Qatari history. In the early 1900s, the founder of modern Qatar, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, ruled from the Founder’s Fort in Lusail settlement. Today, Qatar’s second largest city is synonymous with cutting-edge technology, smart infrastructure and green urban planning that includes eco-friendly transportation, environmentally conscious architecture and vast green spaces.

Top things to do in Lusail

From thrilling theme parks and luxury shopping to big-name sporting events, Lusail has something for everyone.

World-class art & entertainment

Your first stop for adrenaline-filled fun should be Meryal Water Park, adjacent to Rixos Premium Qetaifan Island North. This fun-filled waterpark features 53 slides and 69 attractions, including the world’s tallest waterpark tower at Icon Tower. Next on your list is Qatar’s main entertainment hub, Al Maha Island, which comes alive every winter with the opening of Lusail Winter Wonderland –  a world-class theme park with over 100 rides and attractions, delicious food and drinks, and live entertainment. Al Maha Island is also known for Nammos Beach Club and a range of top restaurants like Zuma, LPM and Carbone.

Another exciting development to look forward to is Lusail Museum. Set to open in 2029, it will house the largest collection of Orientalist paintings and photography in the world. Its striking circular design will become a prominent feature on the southern tip of Al Maha Island.

A taste of true luxury

Imagine shopping and dining in a Parisian-inspired shopping district that stretches over 1,000,000 sqm. That’s what you’ll discover at the luxurious Place Vendôme – four floors filled with high-end and mid-range stores, cafes, restaurants, and food courts, plus a canal featuring the famous dancing fountains every night.

Another great place to hang out, is Lusail Boulevard. This glamorous 1.3km road in the heart of Downtown Lusail is lined with shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Lusail Boulevard is known for annual events like the Luminous Festival and comes alive during Qatar National Day, Ramadan and Eid celebrations. Don’t miss a photo opportunity underneath the 30m-wide whale shark sculpture (called Al Nehem), suspended between Lusail’s four towers.

A global stage for sport

Lusail has been the host of many iconic events like the FIFA World Cup™ Final and Formula 1® races. In the area, you can visit the Lusail Sports Arena, which regularly hosts handball, volleyball and basketball events, plus music concerts. Its distinctive glass structure reflects the sand, pearls and sea of Qatar, providing a unique backdrop for various activities.

Football lovers will remember Lusail Stadium  from the FIFA World Cup™ – crafted by renowned architects Foster + Partners and inspired by the traditional Fanar lantern adorned with Arab bowls and vessels. You might also catch a racing event at Lusail International Circuit, home of Formula 1® and MotoGP races. For a taste of the ancient sport of archery, visit the Lusail Shooting and Archery Club, which hosted prestigious championships like the 2006 Asian Games and the 2011 Arab Games.

Crescent Park and Lusail Marina Promenade

Immerse yourself in the eco-friendly beauty of Crescent Park, where the innovative design draws inspiration from the serene  Qatari desert  environment. Themed playgrounds, sports facilities, and lush green spaces irrigated with recycled water make this open area a true delight.

Stroll along Lusail Marina Promenade and enjoy interactive fountains and picture-perfect views of Katara Towers. As the sun sets, Lusail Marina transforms into a magical setting with beautifully lit pathways and fountains reflecting the glittering lights on the water. Make a stop at the Lusail Marina Food Arena – a dream come true for all foodies with around 65 dining options including food trucks, coffee shops, street eateries and more.
