Hamad International Airport

Named after the previous Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Hamad International Airport first opened in 2014. Today, the airport serves 48 airlines and provides connectivity to over 190 destinations worldwide. It has the capacity to welcome over 58 million passengers a year.

How to get there?

How HIA evolved to the world’s best airport

HIA is known for its swooping wave-like curves and tranquil atmosphere. The terminal and concourses, designed by the architecture firm HOK, offers a seamless experience from check-in and immigration to baggage claims. It has been named the World’s Best Airport three times (2021, 2022 and 2024), praised by the Skytrax Awards as the most architecturally significant terminal complex in the world, as well as being the most luxurious. In 2024, it also won awards for the World’s Best Airport Shopping and the Best Airport in the Middle East.

5 reasons that make HIA the best airport in the world

Hamad International Airport is an extraordinary destination – a playground of discovery that offers world-renowned art, luxurious shopping, tranquil spaces and fun for kids.

ORCHARD: A tropical masterpiece

ORCHARD is a sanctuary of calm inside the airport. This 6,000 sqm indoor tropical garden includes over 300 trees and over 25,000 plants and shrubs sourced from sustainable forests around the world. It also boasts a 575 sqm water feature, which is an aquatic plant-filled sustainable bio pond.

ORCHARD is illuminated with natural light through a grid shell roof, with performance glass to control and filter the light required to maintain a rainforest of mature trees. Relax on the ‘grass’, admire the view from elevated walkways or grab a coffee from one of the open air coffee shops nearby.

Unwind…or get active

Visit the Vitality Wellbeing and Fitness Centre at the Oryx Hotel, where you can take a dip in the 25-metre swimming pool, work out at the gym, enjoy playtime at the golf simulator and squash court, or visit the tranquil spa.

The airport also offers sleep ’n fly lounges and showers, and a Be Relax Spa. There are quiet rooms for passengers to rest and a variety of lounges. A multi-sensory lounge caters to children with autism and other special needs.

Indulgent shopping and dining

With over 200 retail and dining outlets, Hamad International Airport offers an unparallelled experience. Along with high-end boutiques like Tag Heuer, Fendi and Dior, you can also browse Souq Al Matar. Built like a traditional Qatari souq, you can shop, dine, and experience a taste of Qatar without having to leave the airport.

Go on a global art tour

Doha’s airport is known for having a stunning art gallery, with over 30 larger-than-life displays. ‘Lamp Bear’ by Urs Fischer is the most famous, followed by Jean-Michel Othoniel’s ‘COSMOS’ and KAWS’ ‘Small Lie’. Near the passenger train is ‘A Message of Peace to the World’ by Qatar-based Iraqi artist Ahmed Al Bahrani. Also look out for art pieces by Tom Otterness, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst and Jenny Holzer.

Fun entertainment for families

Kids will love exploring the many activity nodes at the airport. Each one offers televisions, internet browsing, toys, mini-rides and climbing frames. There are five activity nodes inside the passenger terminal: one each in Concourse A and Concourse B, and three in Concourse C.

The Qatar stopover experience

Discover the best of Qatar, whether you have a few hours to spare or a few days. It’s a fascinating place to explore on the way to your holiday destination.
