Wildlife of Qatar

Qatar’s diverse ecosystems provide a rich habitat for an array of extraordinary wildlife. From desert-dwelling creatures to vibrant birdlife and marine species, there’s plenty to discover in nature across the peninsula.

Arabian Oryx

The national animal of Qatar, the Arabian Oryx is one of four species of antelopes native to the Arabian Peninsula. It’s known for its long, spear-like horns and distinctive black and white face markings.

Falcons, Qatar's pride!

Honoured and celebrated, falcons are an integral part of Qatar’s rich heritage and culture. These birds of prey are part of the hawk family and renowned for their strong talons, hooked beak, razor-sharp eyesight and astonishing flight skills.

Whale sharks

Fascinating flamingos

Hawksbill turtle spotting

Experience turtle spotting on the pristine shores of the Fuwairit Beach, where three different species of sea turtles gather each year. This area is considered one of the largest and most essential nesting habitats for the hawksbill sea turtle. 

Dugongs

The world’s second-largest population of dugongs live in Qatar, with herds of 600-700 previously recorded. It is believed that these marine mammals first appeared in the waters of the Arabian Gulf approximately 7,500 years ago.

Qatar’s natural environment is home to a remarkable range of wildlife. In the desert, you might spot creatures such as the elusive sand cat, desert hare, red fox, the hardy honey badger and the sand gazelle. Qatar’s birdlife is equally diverse, with over 350 recorded species, of which more than 200 are migratory birds.

Qatar is a seasonal stopover for species like the cream-coloured courser, greater hoopoe-lark, and the lappet-faced vulture. In the mangroves, you might spot the Socotra cormorant, a vulnerable species found only here. Reptile lovers could look out for the toad-headed agama, short-fingered gecko and the Persian sand gecko.
