Sarah Lord, a kitesurfing expert, tells us everything we need to know about this fascinating water activity.
Sarah Lord was drawn to the ocean from childhood. Her dad is a windsurfing expert, and that made her love the water and all things related. In 2006, she travelled to Mauritius, where she obtained her certification and qualification for kitesurfing. In the years since, she has travelled around the world to perfect her craft.
It's a fantastic experience. It feeds the soul, as you feel truly connected to mother nature. You can experience both the adrenaline of the sport and the tranquility of the sea at the same time; it is a truly unique feeling.
On one of my trips, I met a Norwegian couple who loved kitesurfing. They were and travelling around the world to find the best spots. Once, on their way to the Philippines they stopped in Qatar for a layover. I met them and took them to some of the best places for kitesurfing in the country. They were awestruck by the amazing locations and surfing spots. They loved the fact that they wouldn't have to take long flights to practice their favourite sport and could just take a 5-hour flight to Doha instead.
It’s an adventure worth trying! The sport doesn’t require physical strength or fitness. A person of any age can kitesurf if they learn the technique. With a few lessons from a qualified instructor, one is ready to go.
Start your day early with a walk in The Pearl; you can also have breakfast there at one of the many eateries. Then, head over to your chosen spot to carry on with water activities. Book ahead through Blue Pearl for kitesurfing or to rent a SUP at Al Safliya Island or Qatar Water Sports for jet skiing. If you're into desert safari, then book it in advance with 365 Adventures.
