Student assistance

Must know information

Language requirements:

Undergraduate courses are typically taught in English. Foreign-speaking students will have to take two language proficiency tests: the IELTS and the TOEFL scoring at least 6.0-6.5 and 70-80 depending on the university unless they have completed and passed required exams at an English-speaking institution.

Getting overseas qualifications recognised:

Most universities recognize International Baccalaureate (IB) diplomas, the US GPA system, British A-levels and the KSA school system for undergraduate admissions. High school diplomas from other systems may need to be attested by the Ministry of Education and your local Qatari embassy.

Funding for studies:

Students can apply for scholarships directly with each university with some funding available from private programmes and institutions.

How to apply:

Students must apply directly to their chosen university or college. In many cases, domestic and international students can now apply online.

Accommodation:

Most students attending an institution on Education City opt to stay in student housing. The campus has purpose-built modern residential halls with studio, one- and two-bed apartments. Facilities are excellent with a reception area, computer lab, prayer rooms, study spaces, a dining court and coffeeshop. www.qf.org.qa/education/student-housing

Student healthcare:

Qatar has a good healthcare system and residents can pay a fee of QR100 for a state Hamad Medical Corporation card offering free emergency care and subsidised procedures. Many people opt to pay for private health insurance, which usually costs between QR100 and QR250.

Currency:

Qatar uses the Qatari Rial, abbreviated to QR or QAR. It is divided into 100 dirhams, and is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed exchange rate of US$1 = 3.64QAR

Cost of living:

Petrol is cheap with coffee and popular food items often more expensive than fuel due to the fact that Qatar imports approximately 90% of all food consumed. Accommodation can be expensive with student housing fees per semester ranging from QR9,440 to QR12,140.
