The building belonged to Sheikh Abdallah bin Thani bin Jassim bin Muhammad Al Thani, grandson of the founder of the State of Qatar. It is associated with an important historical member of the ruling family, Sheikh Thani (1856-1943), who was known as the sheikh of Al Gharafa. The building had a residential use and was part of a fenced land with agricultural cultivation surrounded by properties of similar characteristics. It consists of a courtyard house with a series of majlises in and outside the boundary wall. Although some sources date the house to 1935, the earliest available visual evidence of the building dates to 1963. By then, the settlement and the expansion of the plantation areas in Al Rayyan had substantially grown and the house could be seen with its current layout. By 1977, the building was abandoned and the roofs had either been taken out for reuse elsewhere or had collapsed. In 2004, the building was excavated and rebuilt by Qatar Museum Authority, adding an upper majlis.
