Designed by Iraqi architect and calligrapher Taha al-Hiti, the minarets feature vertical calligraphy that sweeps upward, taking the viewer’s eye heavenward in a contemplation of faith and meaning. The mosque is supported by five pillars, each representing one of Islam’s pillars: Shahada (profession of faith), Salah (prayer), Zakat (giving alms), Sawm (fasting) and Hajj (pilgrimage).

Though it serves as a community mosque for the surrounding Al Rayyan area, the Education City Mosque is a commentary on the compatibility between Islam and modernity. Individuals from all backgrounds are welcome to visit. It boasts the capacity to host 1,800 worshippers in its main prayer hall and another 1,000 in its exterior courtyard. In its outdoor spaces, the EC Mosque features four streams that siphon water to a garden in the center of the building. Each of these represent the four rivers of Paradise promised in the Qur’an: water, honey, milk and wine. The complex also houses the Qur’anic Botanic Garden, which contains plants been mentioned in the Holy Qur'an, along with Qatar’s native flora. Designed to reflect Islamic art and architecture, the garden focuses on harmony, maintaining and preserving plant diversity from around the world.

With a mission to be more than just a place of prayer, the facility has also hosted a variety of events for the entire community since it first opened, offering a diverse range of activities for those who seek to gain knowledge. The Minaretein building is also home to Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Islamic Studies (CIS), which provides a unique platform that contributes to critical intellectual debates on Islam in a global context through its blended academic programs and an immersive learning experience.

The spiral building plan and multiple routes connecting the school to the mosque reflect the notion that all knowledge ultimately derives from faith. In 2017, the building, formerly known as the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies, won the American Architecture Prize for Educational Buildings, Cultural Architecture, and Institutional Architecture. In 2016, it was nominated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for its inaugural international prize. In 2015, it won the Best Religious Building prize at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Singapore.

Two minarets stretch up to 90 metres into the sky and point straight towards Makkah.
