Souqs remain an important part of daily life in Qatar, and with its central location within Doha, Souq Waqif is an ever popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
Its labyrinthine alleys contain all sorts of wonders – Middle Eastern merchandise from dates, honey, spices and seasonal delicacies to perfumes, jewellery, textiles, clothing, pets, handicrafts and souvenir bargains. Traditional music, art and cultural shows – as well as an eclectic mix of restaurants and cafés – add to the ambience of this special place.
At the Gold Souq across the street, all that glitters is, in fact, gold. Shoppers can find a rich variety of jewellery, both traditional and contemporary pieces, at competitive prices.
Other well-known souqs in Qatar include: the beachside Souq Waqif Al Wakra, which features a range of retail outlets, coffee shops and restaurants; the fabric souq and tailors of Souq Al Deira.
