Why does Qatar have a sports day?
Qatar is one of the few countries in the world to dedicate a national day to sports. Schools, offices and shops are closed for the day to create an opportunity for everyone to join in physical activities and initiate the effort to stay healthy.
The first National Sports Day in Qatar was declared in 2012 by the Deputy Emir of Qatar, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Today, the occasion encompasses events for people of all ages and abilities, education around sports and its importance, as well as special appearances by sporting stars.
Events taking place across Qatar
Exciting events are arranged in collaboration with the Qatar Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Culture and Sports. There will be races, walking, yoga, golf, team sports, demonstrations, workshops, expos and much more for everyone to get involved in.
Education City NSD Race 2024
Al Shaqab Parking P4 - Education City | 7:30 AM onwards
This popular annual race will spring into action at Education City. It will be run on an accurately measured short course with multiple laps for up to 350 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
Triathlon: Try-a-Tri
Awsaj Recreation | 09:00 AM – 12:00 PM
If you swim, cycle or run, you can try a triathlon on National Sports Day. There are categories for all ages and abilities in this friendly event, which has attracted several VIP participants in recent years.
Education City Mountain Bike Trail
Education City | 06:30 AM – 09:30 AM
Keen riders will share a morning of cycling in a 4-km loop mountain bike trail, as well as a mini loop for children. This is the first time this new event has taken place.
Shukran Cup: Final Games and Closing Ceremony
Education City | 08:00 AM – 02:30 PM
It’ll be a show of sportsmanship in the Finals and Semi-Finals of football, basketball, volleyball and cricket. Join the excitement at various Education City venues.
