Pearls of Qatar

Pearls and Qatar are forever intertwined. Our rich pearling heritage continues to shine through museums, festivals, iconic attractions and local folklore. Discover the story of Qatar’s once-thriving pearl trade—and how these iridescent gems are celebrated in Qatari culture even today.

Rich legacy of pearl diving

For generations, Qataris lived in harmony with the sea and desert, following seasonal rhythms shaped by nature. In the summer, many joined perilous pearling expeditions aboard traditional wooden dhows, using simple tools like ropes, diving weights, and baskets. These journeys, though physically demanding and often dangerous, helped shape the resilience and heritage that continue to define Qatari identity today.

Why are natural pearls so rare?

A pearl bead is formed if an ‘irritant’, such as a grain of sand, travels inside the mollusc of an oyster shell. Whereas cultured pearls guarantee near-perfect results, you need around 10,000 shells to find 3 to 5 pearls, and they may be irregular in size and vary in quality.

Pearls are embroidered in Qatari culture

Thousands of years ago, pearls were Qatar's first major export commodity. Discover pearl culture in Qatar through its fascinating history, villages, festivals, monuments and fine jewellery.

The golden era of pearls

Pearl diving has a long history in the Gulf region, with evidence of the pearl trade dating back to the Roman Empire. A major source of income, pearls were initially traded to India, Persia, and the Ottoman Empire. The pearl trade boomed in the 1900s, with pearls exported to Europe, Asia and North America. By the 1930s, this golden age ended due to the emergence of cheaper cultured pearls and the discovery of oil and gas.

Villages anchored to the sea

To witness remnants of Qatar’s pearl trading past, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Zubarah. The fort has been transformed into a museum where visitors can explore artefacts from the pearl diving. You’ll also see glimpses of Qatar’s pearling past at the Al Jassasiya Rock Art Site and abandoned fishing villages like Al Jumail and Al Areesh.

A culture of nature’s treasures

Pearls are celebrated throughout the country, including the Qatar Pearl Monument on the Corniche, the Pearl Island, Souq Waqif and Souq Al Wakrah pearl markets, and the oyster-inspired interiors of the Doha Metro. At the National Museum of Qatar, you’ll see prized pearl jewellery pieces and special artefacts like the Baroda carpet – embellished with thousands of Gulf seed pearls.

Celebrations of Qatar’s seafaring past

Qatar hosts regular events to connect younger generations with their maritime past. The Senyar Festival by the Katara Cultural Village Foundation features pearl diving competitions, while the Katara Traditional Dhow Festival hosts family-friendly workshops and contests like pearl diving, rowing and ‘swordfishing’.
